League-wide trends and leaderboards, built from play-by-play data going back to 1999.
Actual make rate vs. nflverse's own expected-make model, by 5-yard distance bucket.
Makes above expected (actual makes minus nflverse's expected-make total), minimum 10 attempts. Uses the same season range as the chart above.

Approximated as any kickoff under 25 yards (nflverse has no explicit onside flag) -- validated against real recovery-rate data, but not an official tag. The 2018 kickoff-alignment rule change all but ended the play.
Each bar is one season's onside tries: the solid part was recovered by the kicking team, the dashed part wasn't.
Drag through the years (or press play) to watch the league legislate the kickoff nearly out of existence — then bring it back. Regular season, onside kicks counted separately.
Where the receiving team's drive started (share of kickoffs, 5-yard bands). Dashed line: that year's touchback spot.
Extra points vs. two-point tries now have a tab of their own: Two-Point Conversions →
Drag the line of scrimmage. The ball sails to where punts from there land on average, and the dashed arrow shows the return — ending where the other team takes over. Punters have gotten a lot better since 1999.
Every punt in the league, season by season — this chart doesn't follow the slider above. The lines are average distance in yards (left scale): gross is how far the punt flew, net takes off the return. The bars are the share of punts that pinned the other team inside its own 20 (right scale).
| Punter | Punts | Gross | Net | Inside 20 | Touchback |

Set the kick, then hit Kick it! Drag the field (or the yard slider) to change the distance. The odds come from our own model of every field goal since 1999 — distance, wind, cold, altitude, dome and era.
Copy a link to this kick · Reset my tally · Model: logistic regression on kicks with known conditions; dome games count as 70°F (21°C) and calm.
Share of 4th downs where the offense went for it, by season -- the analytics revolution, visible as a line.
Reframed from "coin-toss result" -- nflverse has no coin-toss data at all. This tracks the team that received the opening OT kickoff instead, which answers nearly the same question.
After a touchdown: kick the extra point, or go for two? Pick a season and the seesaw tips toward whichever was worth more on average. In 2015 the extra point moved back to a 33-yard kick — and coaches started going for two.

After a touchdown, how often teams went for two (bars) and how often it worked (line), by the score right after the touchdown. Down 2? Two ties it. Up 1? Two makes it a field-goal lead instead of a two-point one.
Two-point tries by play type, since 2015 and since 1999.
Tries in the last five minutes or overtime, down 1 or 2 right after the touchdown — make it to tie or take the lead.

New head coaches each season: offseason hires, and mid-season changes (usually an interim taking over after a firing). Heads up: nflverse stopped recording interim coaches in 2024, so mid-season changes from then on don't show — and a fired coach is credited with his replacement's games.
